Mourinho is ready to take a £16m pay cut to manage Manchester United and within 24 hours of his sacking the Portuguese got phone calls from United hierarchy twice.

The recently sacked Chelsea boss is keen to take charge at Old Trafford if United decides to fire Louis van Gaal and The Times revealed earlier today that he was contacted by Manchester United officials within 24 hours of his exit from Chelsea but earlier reports claimed the Portuguese will not go for United job as he thinks van Gaal still needs time.

The Dutchman, 64, is on the brink after a woeful run of 6 matches without a win that has pushed United down the Premier League and also ousted from Champions League.

Mourinho is right now waiting for a new exciting challenge following his exit from Chelsea last week and according to Daily Star he is ready to accept a four-year contract worth around £6m-per-season to replace Van Gaal.

As a matter of fact, the Portuguese was the highest paid manager in Premier League at Stamford Bridge, where he bagged a stunning £10m-per-year.

But he has reportedly confirmed United officials that he is willing to join the Red Devils on similar terms to Van Gaal’s current contract for one of the biggest jobs in world football.

A source close to Mourinho said: “Jose is making no secret of how keen he is to take charge of United if the job becomes available.

“It is not about the money. Managing United has always been one of his ambitions because of the prestige and history associated with the club.

“He knows it would be a huge challenge, but he loves working in English football and would take a wage cut if it meant getting the chance to make United great again.”

The pressure on executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward to act swiftly is as Manchester United’s season now threatens to unravel.

Van Gaal’s current contract runs until the end of next season and apparently would be due about £9m in compensation if he is fired.

Some reports also claim that Woodward is confused over what to do with LVG’s assistant, current No.2 Ryan Giggs. The former United star has enjoyed the last 18 months being groomed to succeed van Gaal when he decides to leave and is certainly regarded as a legend of Old Trafford to the supporters following his colourful playing career.

But the Welshman is now facing a potential danger of being tarnished by Van Gaal’s failed stint and could be given permission to leave if Mourinho is drafted in in a short notice and the Portuguese bring in his own backroom team.
