In a convincing reply to all those who compare him with Lionel Messi, Germany’s World Cup star, Mario Gotze has said that it will be nearly impossible for him to replicate Messi’s feats.
“Messi has proven his entire career at Barcelona that he is at another level. You simply cannot compare me to Messi. He has achieved so many things and has set the bar so high that it is nearly impossible to reach his level for anyone. Messi is something special and simply an amazing player” said Gotze of the frequent comparisions.
The Bayern Munich midfielder who came in as a substitute to slot home Germany’s World Cup winning goal against Argentina, humbly said that he had a lot of work to do before even thinking of getting near Messi.
The young German who was motivated by coach Joachim Low to prove that he was better than Messi in the World Cup final, said that Low’s words inspired him to score the winning goal.
“I am often confronted with Low’s words, but I think he only said it to motivate me. And that clearly worked out well”.
Gotze also put faith in Bayern Munich coach, Pep Guardiola and hoped he could lift him up, to Messi’s standards.
“Can Pep Guardiola lift me to Messi’s level? It would be great if he manages to do that.”
“But like I said, Messi has set the bar incredibly high. You can possibly come close occasionally, but it will be tough to perform at that level consistently. I obviously work hard to improve, though” said the 22 year old.
Gotze, who was released from Borussia Dortmund to Bayern Munich in 2013, is the second most expensive German player behind Mezut Ozil. He was transferred for a record fee of 37 million euros.
