Chennaiyin FC – Indian Super League’s Standout Performer Team at Half-Time
Superstar Rajinikanth cheers for them in the stands, Star of the millennium Amitabh Bachchan is present at almost every alternate game, India’s biggest sporting icon Mahendra Singh Dhoni is the co-owner of the team, are these good enough reasons for Chennaiyin FC, for being the standout team thus far in the inaugural season of Indian Super League?
The above factors definitely lend a supporting hand, however the beautiful game like all other things in life, is judged according to the on field results. Chennaiyin FC’s five star performances can help us to decipher the reason for them being the standout performers thus far in the league; a league which is touted to change the way football is going to be perceived and played in India.
Pitted as UNDERDOGS –
The biggest football extravaganza in India had its fair share of hiccups. There were dates announced and league was pushed to another date more than once and when it was finally given a go-ahead the Bengaluru franchise backed out few days ahead of the auction. As a result, Chennai was a late entrant and the ownership was announced well after the initial round of auctions. Everyone expected them to play catch up with the rest of the teams, but to everyone’s surprise they have come out with the one of most balanced squad in addition to favorable results. It may eventually pave way for an exciting story if they are still in the mix around 20th of December.
Stats DO NOT LIE!
No! It’s not inspiration from the album of a famous Columbian singer. Chennaiyin FC has been the standout performers in Indian Super League purely on form, with the likes of Atletico De Kolkata. They have allowed the maximum number of goals on an average as it stands, however they have scored more goals with vengeance and have got results in their favor. With a high percentage of shots and shots on target they are proving out to be an entertaining side to watch. They surely know how to get the right mix, guess they have taken a cue from their Co-owner Mahendra Singh Dhoni.
While for Obvious reasons, the Indian media and fans were excited to have international superstars featuring in the Indian Super League, somehow the most potent of all marquee signing, was quietly waiting for his turn to bask in glory. The first half of the ISL, has surely made Elano Blumer register himself into the mindset of Indian football viewing audiences and has shown glimpses of his time as a playmaker for Manchester City and Galatasaray. Elano is also one of the youngest marquee players at 33 and his ball control, trickery and non- stop goal scoring prowess (Eight goals and one assist) has ensured that this Chennaiyin FC marquee player is the real deal.
The ‘BEAUTIFUL’ Game
Football is called the beautiful game for a lot of reasons. One of them is notably the magic which is created by the players on the pitch. With a plethora of talent in their ranks, Chennaiyin FC has served these moments on a regular basis. Whether it was the stunning bicycle kick of Bernard Mendy or the guile and magic of Elanos free kicks, the team is a treat to watch with these special moments of magic round the corner, every time the team is on the pitch.
Chennaiyin FC Crowd support
Chennai is typically not considered as a football bastion, however with the star power at display as a loyal supporter base, the Chennai residents are turning up in great numbers to watch and support their home team. With an average attendance of twenty thousand odd, the Chennaiyin FC club is getting a thumbs-up even from the locals.
Some credits has to be given to the Arsenal fans from Chennai (Arsenal Chennai Supporters Club in Facebook) who come out in large numbers for each and every match, welcomed the Arsenal Legends Freddie Ljungburg and Robert Pires, who were a part of the invincibles, designed a huge banner for Elano and Benard Mendy and more importantly, they stay back after the match gets over and clean the stands, which is a really good initiative.
Will the juggernaut keep rolling? Only time will tell, but as it stands, a Chennaiyin FC faithful may not look elsewhere as their team is playing an exciting brand of football.
