Injury Update: Manchester United Plunged Into Defender Crisis After Latest Knock
Manchester United are relieved when they came to the extent of Marcos Rojo’s injury.
Rojo was taken off in the first half against Reading in the FA Cup third round.
And Jose Mourinho was worried he could face an extended spell on the sidelines.
But the Daily Record report that United are confident he did not suffer a muscle tear and should be back in action to help the club’s demanding January.
Rojo is believed to have suffered the injury because he was overcompensating for a knock he had picked up in training.
After the game, Mourinho said: “I don’t know [what the damage is]. We have to wait a little bit. A muscle is a muscle and you’re always afraid of it that let’s see what is going on.
“It would be so important for us to keep our central defenders fit for the month of January. But I prefer to wait. Chris Smalling and Phil Jones did a very good job for us.”
Manchester United have lost Eric Bailly to the Africa Cup of Nations for the month of January and have been linked with moves for several defenders.
Seven different partnerships have been tried and tested by Mourinho since the season kicked off, with none truly able to call themselves the go-to pairing.
Injury and suspension ensured Eric Bailly and Daley Blind were the starting choices back in August and helped United to three straight Premier League victories.
Since then, while Blind’s position has been altered under Mourinho, Chris Smalling, Marcos Rojo and Phil Jones have all been given the opportunity to stake a claim to be a permanent centre-back.
Jones and Rojo have emerged as a surprise success in recent weeks, but their pairing was accidental and it came about as a result of absentees and have to prove they can sustain their quality over a longer period, particularly given questions over fitness and form have dogged their careers to date.
Meanwhile, they also have to hold off the competition.
Bailly has adapted swiftly to life in the Premier League and has proved a shrewd acquisition, but an ill-timed injury and the Africa Cup of Nations have allowed others the opportunity to shine in his absence. He will certainly have a point to prove on his return next month.
