Inter Milan teammates Andre Onana and Edin Dzeko got into a heated argument during their round of 16 first leg clash against Porto. Onana apparently yelled at Dzeko and had to be restrained by teammate Hakan Calhanoglu. Following Dzeko’s instruction to him to stop complaining to the referee, Onana shared a furious exchange with the striker. As the former Roma player asked Onana to continue with the play, the Cameroonian responded with a hysterical scream.

Onana appeared to instruct Dzeko to ‘shut up’, and he made an angry gesture in his direction. In order to diffuse the situation, Calhanoglu placed his palm over Onana’s lips. Romelu Lukaku’s goal in the 86th minute handed the Italians a one-goal lead going to Portugal for the second leg despite the argument. With a superb double save to keep the score even, Onana also had a significant impact on the outcome as Lukaku scored a late winner against Porto.

Tensions seem to be boiling in Inter Milan’s dressing room

While Inter Milan did win the first leg with a narrow margin, the tie was unwantedly overshadowed by the incident between Onana and Dzeko. The altercation caught so much fire that Calhanoglu had to shut the goalkeeper’s mouth with his hand and push him back. After the game however, Onana downplayed the unfortunate event and insisted that the most important thing was the victory at San Siro. He told Sky Italia:

“These things happen in the game, everyone has a right to think what they want. If the adrenaline that makes us angry also helps us to win games the way we did tonight, then it’s welcome!”

Calhanoglu added:

“It’s a normal situation, we are in the Champions League and everyone wants to win. We already laughed it over, these things happen when the adrenaline is running high.”

Such an unpleasant and concerning incident between Inter Milan teammates happened for the second time within a week following a similar altercation between Romelu Lukaku and Nico Barella last week during the match against Sampdoria. As Lukaku threw the ball away cheaply during the final minutes of the first half, Barella became irate and raised his arms in the air.

“Don’t do that, enough with these arms! Do not do that! It’s not good, it’s insulting, now stop!”

After Barella responded angrily to Lukaku’s shout, the Belgian attacker concluded the argument by saying:

“F*** you, son of a b***h.”

Inter Milan conducted an investigation of their own but Lukaku and Barella managed to get away without a punishment. Back to Onana, the goalkeeper recently ran into difficulties with his own team Cameroon during an altercation at the World Cup. Onana was reportedly sent home by Cameroon boss Rigobert Song after a furious argument over a disagreement about his playing style. The ex-Ajax ‘keeper then made the decision to retire from international football, declaring that he had achieved his goal of playing for his nation.
