After the Manchester United’s 2-0 loss to Newcastle on Sunday, Luke Shaw, who has been in contract extension talks with Manchester United, criticised his teammates for their “unacceptable” play. The club has now announced that they have tied the left-back to a new deal, which will keep him at the club till 2027.

Luke Shaw, whose deal with United was due to expire at the conclusion of the next season, has made 249 appearances and has established himself as an important player under Erik ten Hag. United had paid £27 million to sign the highly-rated Shaw from Southampton back in 2014. While he was benched at the beginning of the season the England international has since restored his spot as the team’s starting left-back.

After losing to Brighton and Brentford at the start the season, Luke Shaw was benched for five Premier League games by the new United boss Erik ten Hag. While many speculated it as the end of the road at Old Trafford for the veteran English defender, Shaw was determined to prove his point to the Dutch manager.

And the 27-year-old has accomplished his mission, having started each game in the top flight for the Red Devils since making a comeback to the starting eleven for the 2-1 victory at Everton in October. The club, too, has not lagged behind in rewarding their full-back, tying him down to a new, long-term contract with improved terms. Speaking after penning his new contract, Luke Shaw said:

“Nine years ago, I signed for this amazing club, and I’m thrilled to be extending my stay. I’ve grown immensely since coming to Manchester all those years ago, both as a person and as a player; I know what is needed to succeed at a club like this.

“We’re at the beginning of our journey under the manager and his coaching staff. We’ve been successful already this season, but we want much more. There’s a great opportunity to create something special here, and I’m going to give everything to be part of that.”

Also echoing his feelings through his Twitter account, the ex-Saints’ defender wrote:

“So grateful to be extending my stay at @ManUtd! I’ve been here for nine years and it’s my home. I want to achieve a lot more and I want it to be with this team.”

United’s Football Director John Murtough said:

“Luke is a massively important player to the squad and has grown into one of the best defenders in the world. He has been at the club for nearly a decade and understands the expectations for success, and the hard work, commitment and high standards required to achieve it. He has added leadership to his other outstanding abilities, and we all look forward to seeing him in a Manchester United shirt for years to come.”

The news comes after only two days since an irate Luke Shaw criticised his teammates for their appalling performance in Sunday’s defeat at Newcastle. As a result of the defeat, Ten Hag’s men lost third place to the Magpies, and drop down from the Champions League places as Tottenham drew Everton at 1-1 collecting a point from the game.

Across his 249 games for the club, Luke Shaw has scored four goals and recorded 28 assists, winning two Carabao Cups and the Europa League in the process. The veteran left-back has been a mainstay in Ten Hag’s lineup this year, holding off summer acquisition Tyrell Malacia by providing one goal and six assists for the club this season.

With the FA Cup and Europa League still up for grabs, the defender, who was instrumental in United’s drive to Carabao Cup victory earlier in the season, will now be focused on a potential treble. Shaw will however put more focus on finishing in the top four of the Premier League as a game against Brentford on Wednesday approaches at home.
