In this day and age where loyalty can be bought at a price, there will be few footballers (if any) who will dedicate their entire lifespan to one single club. With his talent, attitude and the impact he had on Football in England, Stevan Gerrard will be regarded as one of the best ever to have played for Liverpool. It’s a day of mixed emotions across the world of football as it is officially announced that Gerrard will make an exit from Anfield at the end of the season.
Stevie G made his debut for Liverpool in a Premier League fixture against Blackburn Rovers and had a nervous start to his career, but as the hierarchy at the club backed his talent and surely turned out to be one of the best midfielders in the world. In a league which was full of title winning midfielders such as Roy Keane, Patrick Viera and others Gerrard carved a niche for himself. His booming crosses, goal fetching free kicks, scoring goals when the chips were down made him the hottest football player in Europe. He overturned the lure of joining a potential title winning Chelsea side as he rejected the touted 20 million pound. In fact he went on to achieve European glory under Rafa Benitez and proved his point to all those who criticized his decision to stick with Liverpool.
The timing of his run at the club coming to an end has evoked emotional responses globally from all the supporters of Liverpool FC. His glittering career at Liverpool fetched him trophies, adulation and respect from all across the globe. As we say there is no one irreplaceable in today’s day and age but one thing is for certain, there will never be another Stevan Gerrard, one who wore his heart on his sleeve, overturned the temptation for glory and kept fighting day in day out to ensure success at Liverpool FC.
