Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher was asked to name his three greatest footballers of all time, and with no surprise the former Liverpool defender snubbed Cristiano Ronaldo from his list. The Portuguese, despite recently scoring his 700th goal of club career and 817th overall didn’t fit Carragher’s shortlist of three players who made him go ‘wow’.
Ronaldo returned to Manchester United last summer, and has so far netted a significant 26 goals in 49 appearances for the club. However, the Red Devils missing out on Champions League football this season resulted in the 37-year-old making a failed attempt to force out an exit from the club. Furthermore, a managerial change at Old Trafford which saw Erik ten Hag takeover the job now has Ronaldo warming the bench, with the Dutchman preferring young legs up front.

Carragher-Cristiano Ronaldo’s tussle continues as the pundit picks his
Jamie Carragher and Cristiano Ronaldo have known to be at crossroads ever since the talismanic forward re-joined United. The former Liverpool captain has consistently accused the forward for disrupting the Red Devils’ progress by holding them back. Moreover, after his exit drama Carragher slammed Ronaldo for creating unnecessary issues of the field, which impacted United’s on-field exploits.
The five-time Ballon d’Or didn’t hold back his anger however, as he embarrassed Carragher by not greeting him during United’s face-off with Liverpool in August. As Carragher, Keane and Gary Neville were on punditry duties for the clash, Ronaldo took a breather from his warm-up to catch up with his old mates. However, Carragher who was waiting to ‘shake hands’ got blanked by the Portuguese.
The former Champions League winner with Liverpool now gave it back to the United man by snubbing him from his three-man list of GOATs of the game. On being asked to name his three greatest footballers, Carragher who was sitting alongside Man United great Roy Keane on Sky Sports said:

“The player who made me just go ‘WOW!’, number one for me would be [Lionel] Messi. And if Argentina win the [2022] World Cup, I think it would almost cement him in a lot of people’s eyes as the number one. [Diego] Maradona, for what he did in ’86; I was a young kid watching it, and I couldn’t believe what I was watching and then I would go Zidane.
“I just think Zidane for what he did in the biggest moments; the World Cup final, the goal at Hampden in the Champions League final, his performance in the Euro 2000, which he won, was special.”
Cristiano Ronaldo, who made Roy Keane’s list however went missing from Carragher’s. Moreover, given the feats he has achieved throughout his career so far, it was definitely a harsh call from the former defender. Apart from his 32 trophies for club and country which include a staggering 5 Champions League titles and the famous EURO 2016 win with Portugal, Ronaldo has 5 Ballon d’Ors and 2 The Best FIFA Men’s Player awards to his name.
