Just two days after Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho insisted that he will never sell misfiring United captain, Wayne Rooney, reports have emerged that the Portuguese tactician has told the player’s advisers that they can leave the club to get regular first team action.
The England international has started the season poorly and was dropped from the starting eleven after United’s shock 1-3 loss to Watford. Since then he had been used as a substitute in three league games. The 31-year old missed United’s 4-0 thrashing to Chelsea last week. With the team’s form getting worse with every passing game, it was speculated that Rooney had to seek other options to get maximum playing time.
But before the Chelsea game, when Mourinho was asked whether he would sell the player, he said:“No never. I will never make that decision. A player of his stature, a player of his history in the club will never go to point where club or manager want to make that decision for him.”
“I put him [Rooney] on the bench for three matches in a row. That is hard for him, hard for me, so that is being ruthless, to put in my mind the interests of the team in front of the player, prestige, status. In this case even legend. To put on bench a player with the numbers he has for club and country is hard.

Well, it seems that the United boss has changed his mind after the drubbing he received at Stamford Bridge. English news outlet The Sun has reported that Mourinho has informed the player and his advisors that he cannot deny a starting place to the out of form striker. The report claimed that Mourinho is still not sure about selling the player but he has made his mind about the player’s role in his team.
Wayne Rooney’s current contract with the Red Devils ends after the 2018 season but his whopping £250,000 a week salary will make the club think twice before letting him live at the club without playing any major role.
