Former Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has once again offered his services to the club, according to Daily Mail. Mourinho is currently in charge of AS Roma, and has had spent a decent spell there having achieved some mixed results. He has the Romans sitting fifth in Serie A currently and in contention for Champions League qualification with level on points with fourth placed Inter Milan.

However, the Portuguese is still interested in returning to Stamford Bridge for a third spell. He first took the Blues’ job in 2004, leaving after a three-year spell in 2007 and returning in 2013, only to be sacked in 2015. But there’s no denying that it was Jose Mourinho who was the pioneer for bringing success in the form of trophies at Chelsea. having also managed Porto, Inter, Real Madrid, Manchester United and Tottenham, Mourinho is now eyeing a homecoming.

Chelsea to stick to Potter than bring back Jose Mourinho

While Jose Mourinho needs no introduction, or a testament to his success at Stamford Bridge, the new ownership of the club led by American billionaire Todd Boehly is reportedly ready to back their manager Graham Potter. The Blues’ manager has come under immense pressure as a result of the poor run of results the club has had. Chelsea have managed only 3 wins in their last 12 games under Potter’s watch, while facing an embarrassing 7 defeats.

However, he is far from being sacked as Boehly and co have provided him a staggering investment of £157m this month alone, taking their total spending across the summer and winter close to a whopping £500m. Over a dozen players have been brought in, which for at least now confirms that Potter is going to be backed by the management.

This however closes the door on a potential Jose Mourinho return. The Portuguese is literally worshipped at Stamford Bridge, having steered the club to three Premier League titles, three League Cups and a FA Cup across the two different spells. Mourinho oversaw a total of 320 games in charge of the Blues, amassing 204 wins at a win percentage of 63.7 and accumulating a stunning 2.09 points per game.

Mourinho joined Roma in the summer of 2021, after being sacked as the Tottenham boss; the only club where he failed to win a trophy. He led the Romans to their first ever European trophy, winning the inaugural UEFA Conference League during the 21/22 season, which subsequently helped the club qualify for the Europa League. They now face RB Salzburg in the Europa League Round of 32 this season.

Meanwhile, Daily Mail add that despite the success, Mourinho is frustrated by Roma’s lack of spending. Although they won the lottery of Paulo Dybala who signed for free in the summer, Roma haven’t backed their manager otherwise with substantial funds. Mourinho is not a reckless spender but his apt signings do guarantee success. Tottenham made the mistake of not backing him enough, and paid the price.

Roma however are not the club who can make available the funds Mourinho demands, which has irked the manager. As a result, he is looking out of the club, and wants Chelsea as his next destination. But the Blues have moved on from their Mourinho days, and reportedly are not even fancying their ex-manger in case Potter is sacked. The former Brighton, for now, stays, but could get the axe if he fails to qualify for the Champions League as the Blues currently sit tenth in the Premier League.
