Jurgen Klopp Delivers Injury Update On Liverpool Trio

Jurgen Klopp has insisted Daniel Sturridge’s injury that he sustained in the 2-2 draw against Sunderland is not too bad.

The England international, whose career at Anfield has been marred by injuries, limped off with 10 minutes to go at the Lights of Stadium but Klopp is hoping the injury is not a serious one. The Reds are already missing some key players due to injury and with Sadio Mane set to leave for the Africa Cup of Nations, another injury can dent their title chances. Philippe Coutinho and Joel Matip are still recovering from their ankle injuries while Danny Ings has been ruled out of the entire season leaving Klopp really short on attacking options.

Speaking after the game, Klopp said:“He (Sturridge) had a knock on his right ankle. I don’t think it is too bad.”

Another key player who sustained a minor injury during the game was left-back James Milner. The former England international left the field at half-time and was replaced by Alberto Moreno but the former Borussia Dortmund boss said that the decision was nothing but a precautionary measure.

“It felt like he (Milner) got a knock on this calf, but he didn’t know exactly,” said Klopp. “So we had to be really careful. That’s why we changed him.”

Meanwhile, Liverpool skipper Jordan Henderson, who missed the game against his former club, is doubtful for the FA Cup third round tie against Plymouth Argyle on Sunday. Henderson limped off the field midway during the 1-0 victory over Manchester City on New Year’s Eve after suffering a heel problem.

Klopp said: “Hopefully it’s not too serious. The FA Cup will be difficult.”

Henderson’s absence was clearly felt as the Reds struggled to control the midfield against David Moyes’ side and were held to a frustrating 2-2 draw. Daniel Sturridge and Sadio Mane gave the visitors lead on two occasions but Jermain Defoe cancelled them out by converting two penalties. The Merseyside outfit is currently second in the table, five points behind Chelsea but the Blues can extend their lead to eight points if they beat Tottenham Hotspur on Wednesday.
