Jurgen Klopp slammed by Premier League rival manager for doing this

It seems managers criticizing their counterpart’s touchline antics is all the rage in modern football.

On Sunday we witnessed Jose Mourinho having a pop at Antonio Conte for cheering Chelsea fans during their 4-0 win over Manchester United.

And after watching his team exit the EFL Cup, Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino condemned Jurgen Klopp’s actions in the closing stages of Tuesday’s win.

Liverpool led by two goals to nil thanks to Daniel Sturridge’s brace but Vincent Janssen’s penalty in the 76th minute increased the tension inside Anfield.

Desperate to hold on, Klopp and his assistants began to plead with referee Jon Moss to award a number of free-kicks to his team. It’s the sort of behavior that is frowned upon, and led to Pochettino describing Klopp’s antics as “strange”.

The Argentinian was also dismayed at Moss for failing to send Liverpool teenager Trent Alexander-Arnold off for a reckless tackle on Ben Davies. The 18-year-old escaped with a booking.

“I think it was strange that at the end of the game they started to complain,” Pochettino said, per the Independent. “The full-back Arnold should be sent off in the first-half, I have seen the tackle again on Ben Davies.

“So after that, it was strange when their bench started to complain with our bench. It is the referee’s authority to say if it was a penalty or not. It was strange.

“They complained about a normal game, but maybe yes, they were lucky to finish with eleven on the pitch.”

The Reds advanced to the quarter-finals of the tournament which they came so close to winning last season.

Klopp reserved special praise for Sturridge, who has found opportunities hard to come by this campaign.

The 27-year-old was an unused substitute in Saturday’s win over West Brom but he sent a clear message to his manager last night.

“He was good,” Klopp said. “He did what he has to do and he was brilliant.

“He could have scored three or maybe four, but I think he was really good and that is his big strength. He showed it at the end.

“He is a finisher, that’s his talent and I had no doubts about him, even when he wasn’t scoring.”
