Jurgen Klopp’s comments at the end of last season’s Champions League final have re-emerged following a 5-2 defeat to Real Madrid in the first leg of the Champions League round of 16. The Reds were dismantled at Anfield on Tuesday evening after initially going 2-0 up inside 14 minutes thanks to goals from Darwin Nunez and Mohamed Salah. Nunez flicked home his 11th goal of the season while Salah capitalised on an error from goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois to become Liverpool’s all-time top goalscorer in Europe.
Vinicius Jr. managed to score twice in the first half, with the second coming from an Alisson pass gone wrong, to ensure the away side went in level at the break. Real Madrid took the lead early in the second half thanks to a header from Eder Militao, and they never looked back. Karim Benzema then added a brace of his own to carry a three-goal advantage back to the Santiago Bernabeu.
Twitter mocks Jurgen Klopp for his ‘book the hotel’ comments
Real Madrid have now defeated Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool twice in the past nine months. Vinicius’ goal in the second half had helped Carlo Ancelotti’s men defeat Liverpool to win their 14th Champions League title the previous campaign. Liverpool lacked the resources to defeat a Madrid team that successfully made multiple comebacks to qualify for the championship match in Paris.
After the conclusion of the game, Jurgen Klopp discussed his team’s performance with BT Sport. Last season, Liverpool faced challenges on all fronts and was two victories away from completing an unprecedented quadruple. The German coach made a clear declaration of purpose by thinking his club may win the Champions League this year. Klopp had said:
“It’s not bad to get to the final – it’s kind of a success although not the success you want to have. I have a strong feeling we will come again. The boys are really competitive and are an outstanding group – they will be that again next season. And we go again. Where’s it next season? Istanbul? Book the hotel!”
However, for Liverpool, overturning a three-goal deficit in the second leg of the round of 16 makes it unlikely at the Bernabeu, let alone reaching Istanbul for the final. And in response to his statements, fans quickly mocked Jurgen Klopp on Twitter. Here are some of their reactions:
