The Anfield erupted on Sunday as Liverpool triumphed over fierce rivals Manchester City with a late goal from Mohamed Salah. The win uplifted the Reds from their ailing start to the season which saw them pick just 2 wins from 8 Premier League outings. Furthermore, it also inflicted a first defeat of the season on City, who are now 4 points adrift of leaders Arsenal. However, the most notable highlight of the clash was Liverpool containing City’s free-scoring striker Erling Haaland, who was looking to add to his tally of 15 league goals so far.

Joe Gomez was handed the task of fighting the David vs Goliath battle against Haaland, as David once again came on top. The 25-year-old put on mighty performance which helped Liverpool keep a clean-sheet and succeed in stopping the striker. Gomez limited Haaland’s exploits and resisted the City attack along with Virgil van Dijk, as he notched up humongous numbers. The Liverpool fans were brimming with joy as they heaped praise on their defender for putting on such a brilliant performance.

Gomez’s blistering outing against City elevates Liverpool fans

Liverpool needed a big performance here against City at home, and Joe Gomez stepped up for the Reds. In the absence of Trent Alexander-Arnold and Joel Matip, it was a huge responsibility on the shoulders of the youngster who had missed the majority of last season after sustaining a tendon injury to his left knee. However,  the England international was back with a bang against City as he ended the game with a stellar 10 recoveries, 6 clearances, 5 long-balls, 3 ground duels won, 3 tackles won and 6 passes into the final third. Liverpool fans couldn’t help but just sing the songs of Gomez’s praises as here are some best reactions:

With calls been made for Joe Gomez to be included in England’s World Cup squad, the Three Lions’ boss Gareth Southgate will certainly pay heed to them after watching the center-back against City. Furthermore, with Reece James and Kyle Walker set to miss the showdown in Qatar, the Liverpool center-back who can also play as a makeshift right-back has made his case to be named in Southgate’s roster which can be announced anytime soon.
