Liverpool may well be sitting in second place in the Premier League table, but it’s fair to say that their fans will be slightly concerned right now.

The club’s latest victory – a 2-0 home win against relegation candidates Sunderland – came at a cost.

Indeed, Philippe Coutinho, who has been the club’s star man throughout the course of the campaign, succumbed to a nasty looking injury on Merseyside.

The full extent of the injury still hasn’t been revealed, but the Liverpool Echo have now offered an update.

The report claims that the club are fearful that the Brazilian has damaged ligaments and could be set for a lengthy period on the sidelines.

Coutinho will undergo a scan on Monday to learn his fate, but there now appears to be every chance that Jurgen Klopp will be without his talisman for the foreseeable future.

In fact, the Echo claim that Coutinho is now a doubt for the Reds’ games over the festive period. His absence would represent a major blow for Liverpool, who are set to take on the likes of Everton and Manchester City in December.

Following the Reds’ win over the Black Cats on Saturday, Klopp revealed that the player will have a scan.

He stated, as per the Mail: “We have to wait for the scan. What we know in this moment is it is something with the ankle and that’s it, so we all have to wait.

“He had pain, but pain gets better. In the first moment, it was obviously very painful but when I saw him at half-time, he said the pain was much better. We have to wait.

“If I have no idea what it is, how can I imagine how long it will be [out]? I am actually quite an optimistic guy – so I hope he can train tomorrow!”

For now, though, Liverpool’s immediate focus will turn to the EFL Cup as they play host to Leeds United on Tuesday night.

After succumbing to a defeat in the final of the competition last season, the Reds will be hoping to claim the trophy this term.
