Laurent Koscielny is turning out to be a big asset for Wenger this season and his consistent performances have bolstered the Gunners’ defence.
Rio Ferdinand has especially been impressed with the French international and has regarded him “The best defender in Premier league”.
According to the former Manchester and England star, Laurent has evolved into the best central defender in the Premier League. The Frenchman was exceptional in his performance against Olympiakos which sealed a spot in the knock-out stage for Arsenal.
The same was not the case in previous seasons where lacked his current aggression. His present form adheres well to the needs of Arsenal and his excellent form is what caught the eyes of Ferdinand.
“Laurent Koscielny, when he’s on form, he’s the best defender in the league for me,” Ferdinand told BT sport.
“He’s one of those you don’t want to play against – he’s quick, he’s aggressive.”
Ferdinand though feels that Arsenal’s defence has to be covered up by some other players in this January transfer window, since both Calum Chambers and Gabriel are not up to the mark required.
“I think they need some more cover in the central defensive area,” he added.
“They need a dominant central midfielder. It’s not been the same since [Patrick] Vieira left.” quotes Ferdinand.
Laurent has been drawing comparisons with Vincent Kompany, who is regarded as the best central defender in English league. But, Ferdinand feels that Vincent isn’t consistently fit enough as a defender and he would choose Laurent to be a more solid, yet aggressive central defender.
Even Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard echoed Ferdinand’s words saying that Koscielny, along with Ramsey are the best in the league, with Aaron Ramsey being the best attacking midfielder when in to form.
Arsenal are now in a good position in the champions league and it will be exciting to see their dual with Europe’s top teams in the coming matches.
