Legends revealed for Man Utd vs Liverpool charity match in Sweden
Manchester United v Liverpool is always a big occasion for fans. It is a huge match whenever the two most successul English clubs play each other, no matter its a friendly match or a competitive match.
The two English giants will play in a charity match in Sweden on September 3rd in which the legends of the clubs will feature.
Manchester United and Liverpool have named nine new players who will take the field in a mouth-watering charity match in Stockholm next month.
Proceeds from the match will go to both the Manchester United Foundation and the Liverpool FC Foundation, in aid of both of their respective community projects.
Both clubs have also named their managers for the one-off game. Club legend Bryan Robson will take care of the United side, while all-time Liverpool leading goalscorer, Ian Rush, will overlook their Merseyside rivals.
The Red Devils originally revealed that both Dennis Irwin and Swedish midfielder Jesper Blomqvist will take the field for them when the fixture was revealed back in June, but the club have recently revealed nine new former players that will also take to the field once again, in aid of these charities.
With a combined 92 Manchester United goals between them, Dwight Yorke, Ronny Johnsen, Quinton Fortune, Russell Beardsmore, Clayton Blackmore, Dion Dublin, Lee Martin, Karel Poborsky and Ben Thornley have now all been added to United’s squad.
Irwin said: “As former players, we always look forward to meeting back up to play in these matches and I’m sure this will be a good competitive match.”
“I’m a trustee for Manchester United Foundation and we do a lot of work in the local community so it’s great that we have matches to raise funds for great causes.”
As for Liverpool, they will also be led by two club legends with Rush in the dug-out and Robbie Fowler wearing the armband, who amassed a staggering 357 Liverpool goals between them during their playing careers.
They named Stephane Henchoz, Luis Garcia, Vladimir Smicer, Bjorn Tore Kvarme, Patrik Berger and Jerzy Dudek back in June, but have also added nine names to their squad, including manager Rush, in the form of Jason McAteer, Didi Hamann, Sander Westerveld, Phil Babb, David Thompson, Salif Diao, Steve Harkness and Abel Xavier.
Reds boss Rush is expecting a typically fierce match when these two huge rivals face off, despite the differing circumstances, saying: “These matches are notorious for their competitive rivalry and this game will be no exception.
“The lads are all looking forward to pulling the boots back on and, as manager, I’ll personally be making sure they give it their all when they step onto that pitch.”
The match will take place at the Friends Arena in Stockholm on September 3, and Thomas Perslund, Managing Director of the stadium, is optimistic the match will be a real success in Sweden.
He said: “We are really excited to welcome these two teams to Friends Arena. Both teams have a large fan base in Sweden, so that bodes well for a really good atmosphere at the event.”
