Despite conceding a goal early, FC Barcelona pegged back two in the nets to clinch the Super Cup title against Sevilla on Sunday. With that, Lionel Messi won his first title as the captain.
Lionel Messi won his first title after being officially appointed as FC Barcelona’s captain.
The records don’t stop here for Lionel Messi. He also became the most successful player in the history of Barcelona post the win. The Argentine now has 33 titles, which is most by any player in the history of the club.
After the elimination of Argentina in the round of 16 in Russia, Messi got a huge break, and he didn’t take part in Barcelona’s pre-season. Thus, the lack of playing time seemed to hurt both Messi and Barcelona.
In the match, Sevilla took an early lead at the 9th minute of the game and kept panicking the La Liga champions. But it didn’t take long for the Argentine star to get back to his usual form.
Just before the end of the first half, Barcelona pegged one back. Messi’s free-kick from a very close range hit the woodwork, but it came straight into the path of Gerard Pique who made no mistake and tapped the ball inside to make it one-all.
Later, FC Barcelona kept better possession in the second half, and they got their result at the 78th minute of the game. And the captain can take some credit for the second goal too.
Messi’s quick freekick gave an opportunity to Ousmane Dembele to try a long-range shot, and the youngster fired the ball in the top corner and made it 2-1.
However, Sevilla got a golden opportunity at the 90th minute of the game after they were awarded a penalty. But Wissam Ben Yedder saw his penalty getting saved, and it also ended the hopes of Sevilla.
Lionel Messi has now 33 titles in his Barcelona career. It includes four Champions League wins, nine La Liga crowns and six Copas del Rey, as well as a record five Ballons d’Or’s.
