Liverpool 1-2 Man United – Van Gaal hails the Liverpool win as the most important of his career
Louis Van Gaal found it very hard to control his smiles in the dugout as his side ran supreme over their fierce rivals at Enemy ground.
Manchester United started the game brightly of the two sides and Juan Mata looked in the mood to kill the game as he ran pass Alberto Moreno and slotted the ball pass Mignolet’s far post. Mata was at it again when he scored from an audacious Bicycle kick and it found the target as well.
The result was helped by Steven Gerrard getting himself sent off only 38 seconds after he replaced Adam Lallana in the second half. Gerrard’s red card knocked the winds out of Anfield crowd’s sails. The victory has further enhanced United’s claim to finish in top 4 as Red Devils now lead Liverpool by 5 points.
Man United manager Louis Van Gaal was overjoyed with the win and was full of praise for his side. Van Gaal touched upon how his tactics were useful against Liverpool, how important the win could be for United in top 4 finish.
Van Gaal on beating Liverpool
“We beat them again with their own weapons and the pressure on the ball,” he said.
“The first half was very good because I knew in advance Liverpool would press us and they did and we played them off the pitch.
“We scored a fantastic goal and gave nothing away so it was a superb first half.
“I come in the dressing room and I give all my compliments again but then in the second half everything changed because of the red card and we did not play like a team any more.
“We were running with the ball, unnecessarily losing the ball and when we didn’t have the ball we didn’t press the opponent with the ball and that was different.
“The second half we were not so good and that is amazing a little bit because we played 11 against 10 and it should be easier but it was not.
Van Gaal on the most important win of his life and what lies ahead
“Now the gap is five points ahead of Liverpool and six ahead of Tottenham and Southampton so the moment to win is one of the most important in my career.
“Nevertheless we didn’t give many chances away because I cannot remember (David) De Gea making a fantastic save.
“He has saved us a lot of times this season but I cannot remember a save.”
