Sadio Mane and Phillipe Coutinho gave Liverpool a deserving 2-1 victory over West Bromwich Albion at Anfield.
Sadio Mane, who arrived at Anfield this term, opened the scoring after being brilliantly set up by Roberto Firmino’s cross. The home side doubled their lead when Phillipe Coutinho when he picked the pass from Mane, then cut inside a West Brom defender to coolly shot into the bottom corner. With the proceedings being dominated by the home team in the second half too, Liverpool were looking all set to secure the three points comfortably but Gareth McAuley’s goal in the 81st minute gave the home team some anxious moments. However, the Reds held on to collect all the three points. But the goal denied them the chance to go top of the table. Nevertheless, the win extended their unbeaten run to nine games in all competitions to leave them second in the Premier League table, behind leaders Arsenal on goal difference.
Here are the player ratings:
Loris Karius: 6.5/10
The goalie had little to do under the bar. Was under little pressure early on after making an unimpressive start with the Reds but Jurgen Klopp’s backing is helping him to settle down. His distributions were very impressive and there was little he could do to avoid West Brom’s goal.
Nathaniel Clyne: 7/10
Played a major role in building the attack from the right flank. Had little trouble to deal with James McClean and used the opportunity to remain involved much more in the game.
Joel Matip: 7/10
What a signing he is turning out to be for the Reds. His physical presence helped the West Brom strikers at bay. Was looking fine while tackling but would look to improve while dealing with the aerial balls.
Dejan Lovren: 7/10
Gave a solid performance once again. Kept Rondon at bay throughout the game.
James Milner: 7.5/10
The makeshift left-back is making a name for himself at this position. As usual worked tirelessly during the game and played several dangerous balls to the front line.
Jordon Henderson: 7.5/10
Helped the Reds to keep the momentum in the midfield by picking up loose balls and converting them to substantial attacks. Received his fifth yellow card of the season late on which means he will miss Tuesday night’s clash with Tottenham Hotspur in the League Cup.
Emre Can:7/10
Was looking slow early on but gained rhythm as the game progressed. Had a big role in the opening goal as he drew West Brom defence out of place before playing an accurate pass for Roberto Firmino on the wing.
Adam Lallana: 8/10
Once again showed why Jurgen Klopp values him so much. The England international’s brilliant footwork and vision once again helped his team’s attackers to cause a lot of problems for the opposition.
Sadio Mane: 8/10
After a not so impressive outing against Manchester United, Mane got back his rhythm and was looking threatening throughout the game. Opened the scoring by brilliantly converting Firmino’s cross .
Roberto Firmino: 8/10
Kept on asking questions to the West Brom defenders. Played the perfect cross for the opening goal. He should work a little bit on his finishing though.
Phillipe Coutinho: 9/10
An influential goal from the Brazilian once again.Provided several dangerous balls in the box and deservedly scored the second goal.
