Liverpool Boss Reveals Striker Out For Nine Months, Surgery Later Today

Danny Ings could miss rest of the season after suffering a serious injury.

The Liverpool striker sustained the injury after coming on in the 68th minute of their EFL Cup clash with Tottenham last week.

It was Ings’ second first team appearance of the season after recovering from an anterior cruciate ligament injury last term.

The 24-year-old damaged the cartilage in his right knee and will undergo surgery later today in London.

Manager Jurgen Klopp revealed his devastation at the news.

Ings has had to be patient this campaign, featuring regularly for the under-23s in a bid to regain fitness.

However, his hopes of action for the first-team were hampered with Roberto Firmino, Daniel Sturridge and Divock Origi ahead of him in the pecking order.

In September, Klopp vowed to give Ings a chance to stake a claim for a place in his team.

“Danny is working hard and good, but the situation is like it is – we have a lot of strikers,” Klopp said.

“He is close, what can I say? He is a wonderful boy.

“It’s not the easiest thing when a player works really hard and then he is not involved, so of course you want to give the player something back for the unrest.

“It is not always possible – but as soon as it is possible, I will pay back.”

“It is typical of Danny’s personality, on and off the pitch, that he picked up this injury to his knee when courageously trying to win the ball back for his team by making a tackle.

“But it is this same personality that means he will come back as good and as strong from this latest setback as he has done in the past.

“I’m told the likely lay off is anywhere from between seven to nine months.

“He is mentally strong, physically strong and will have the very best treatment and rehab possible to make sure when he returns he is ready to play for us at the level we know he is capable of.”
