Liverpool boss meets agent of Bundesliga star

Jurgen Klopp has expressed his interest in signing Swiss player Granit Xhaka. The Liverpool boss has stated Xhaka to be the club’s number one priority of the summer window. Bild has reported that Klopp has already begun with the proceedings of the deal. It is believed that Xhaka’s agent, Andy Gross, met Liverpool’s chief to discuss the deal. The likelihood of the move is high as Xhaka had recently spoken of his wish to move to the Premier League. The Swiss youngster was linked with the Gunners, however, Xhaka is contracted to Borussia Mochengladbach until 2019.

The German club declared that the player isn’t up for sale after multiple interests from several clubs. The club said that they had no intentions of selling the 23 year old. “I would like to say clearly once again at this point: Granit Xhaka wants to stay in Monchengladbach and we do not want to sell him,” declared general manager Max Eberl. “He is a super player for us and will contest the second half of the season here.”

But, the club will happily accept offers accept offers in the summer for Xhaka. The chances of Xhaka exiting from Germany would increase if Mochengladbach fail to secure a spot in the Champions League. His current deal contains a £22million release clause, although it doesn’t kick in until the summer of 2017, when he enters the final two years of his deal. Xhaka, who has 39 caps for his country, has made 127 appearances for Gladbach since his arrival at Borussia-Park.

There has been no confirmed news on Klopp’s contact with the German club but it is believed that the gaffer is leading the race in signing the Swiss. The Reds are currently seventh on the Premier League standings and will play the finals of the Capital One Cup after beating Stoke City on penalties.
