In what will come as great news for many Premier League clubs, Belgium starlet Axel Witsel has provided an update about his future recently.
The 27-year old midfielder was one of the most sought after players in the recent summer transfer window.
The likes of Juventus, Liverpool, Chelsea and even Manchester United were at one point interested in his signature but a deal was not struck by any of the clubs with Witsel’s parent club and he had to stay put at the club for another season.
However, it is now reported that the 27-year old will leave Zenit St Petersburg after failing to agree on terms with the club for a new deal.
The Belgium international is an experienced defensive midfielder who has all the attributes to be a big hit in the Premier League.
He was close to a move to Juventus after the Italian outfit managed to sell their midfielder Paul Pogba for a world record fee but the Belgium giants were not ready to let the player go and did not accept any bids for the 27-year old.
The likes of Liverpool and Chelsea who were also in desperate need for defensive midfielders were interested in his signature while Jose Mourinho had Witsel in his mind if Paul Pogba’s deal fell through.
It will be an interesting time in the life of the player who is reaching his peak as a footballer.
He wants to play in the Champions League with a big club and wants to take that next step forward leaving his parent club with no choice but to let go of him next summer.

Talking to the media, Zenit sporting director Maksim Mitrofanov told Itasportpress : “The club have no intention to extend Witsel’s deal. Witsel doesn’t want to leave us until the end of his deal [but] we have already had an offer”.
This has once against seen the likes of Juventus and Liverpool renew their interest in the 27-year old.
Liverpool’s lack of a top class defensive midfielder has already hurt them this season and Klopp will be desperate for an addition in that position with Borussia Monchengladbach’s Mahmoud Dahoud at the top of the priority list.
But Witsel provides his own threat in the midfield and can be a great addition to the Anfield outfit.
However, it is to be seen if Klopp will make a move for the midfielder next summer. Do you think Witsel should move to Liverpool next summer?
