There may not have been any incomings at Merseyside as far as Liverpool are concerned but fans may see a familiar face leaving in a shock deal. Jose Enrique is in talks with former club Newcastle to sign for them on a short-term deal.

The Spanish left back cost Liverpool £8million when he left St James Park for Merseyside in August 2011 but there is now a chance he could return to help Steve McClaren’s side fight for survival.

To be honest, Jose Enrique doesn’t have any incentive to stay at Liverpool apart from the money as he has not been getting any play time with the Reds. Enrique has made only 3 FA Cup appearances for Liverpool and hasn’t played a minute of Premier League football this season. It would be sensible for Enrique to swap clubs as his Liverpool contract expires in June and it will not be renewed.

The Liverpool Echo report that the transfer is likely to a free transfer and Liverpool will not stand in the player’s way if he manages to agree terms with the Toon as he has no future under Jurgen Klopp.

Enrique has featured in just 12 league games over the past three seasons due to injuries and loss of form. The Spaniard was told by Brendan Rodgers to move on last summer but Enrique rejected the chance to sign for West Brom on the final day.

In 2015 he played just 83 minutes of first-team football and I am not sure why Newcastle would want him now.

Newcastle and Liverpool are both talking to Enrique to see if they can come to a financial agreement and it will ultimately come down to the player’s wishes and whether he wants to go back to the club who brought him to England.
