Liverpool’s fist choice shot stopper Simon Mignolet has been under immense criticism from the fans at the Merseyside but manager Jurgen Klopp showed his confidence in the Belgian with a new 5 year contract that was signed earlier this month.

However, reports now have emerged that the Reds are looking at quality back up for 27 year old. Adam Bogdan who was bough to Anfield by the ex boss Brendan Rodgers has not shown enough promise and is understood to be on his way out of the club.

And it is now reported that the Merseyside outfit has joined the race to sign Leicester City goal keeper Kasper Schmeichel as a back up option behind Simon Mignolet on goal.

According to the Mirror, Jurgen Klopp’s side have made an enquiry for the Denmark International who has been in sizzling form this season for the Foxes.

Claudio Ranieri’s side are currently at the top of the table with a 3 point gap over Manchester City and are looking to cement their place in the top four at the end of the season.

The manager has already made it clear that he does not intend to let any player out of the club this January but recent reports claim that Liverpool will renew their interest in the summer once again.

Schmeichel has started every game of the season for the Foxes and will surely be an able replacement on goal for Liverpool but they will have to fend off interest from a number of Premier League sides for his signature.

According to The Sun, Manchester United are leading the race for the 29 year old and are close to sealing a summer deal for the Denmark International.

The Old Trafford outfit are interested in the services of the Leicester keeper because of the uncertainty over the future of the present shot stopper at the club.

David de Gea is a long term target for the Spanish giants Real Madrid who almost signed him in the summer. If Madrid are able to appeal successfully against their transfer ban, De Gea will be one of the first players to move to the Bernabeau.

This has seen Schmeichel move to the top of the transfer wish list of the Red Devils. They also hope to exploit the United link that the player carries. Kasper Schmeichel’s father Peter Schmeichel was a United player from 1991-99 where he won 5 Premier Leagues, 3 FA Cups and a Champions League trophy with the United side.

However, they will have to fight it out for the signature of Schmeichel junior with their rivals Liverpool if they re to get his to Old Trafford in the summer.

Chelsea were also linked with the goal keeper at King Power but are now out of contention with Courtois and Begovic firmly in hold of the number one spot at Stamford Bridge.

Do you think Liverpool can snatch United’s long term transfer target this summer?
