Former Liverpool forward Stan Collymore claims that the Reds have already started talking about a move for their significant transfer target this summer. After a disappointing season where their only feat at the end of it would be a top-four finish, Jurgen Klopp’s team will be seeking to rebuild in the summer. Many departures are also anticipated.

Liverpool’s midfield in particular has received a lot of criticism, and new speculations suggest that three midfielders, Naby Keita, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and James Milner may be leaving Anfield. As a result, Liverpool have marked Chelsea’s Mason Mount as one of their top targets for summer, with the midfielder’s contract extension dispute known to all.

Chelsea may let Mount join Liverpool suggests Collymore

Mount and Chelsea have been growing apart in recent weeks, as the contract talks between the two parties have been stalled. The midfielder’s current deal expires in the summer of 2024, but there’s already fear hovering around Stamford Bridge that the academy star won’t be in West London until then, or beyond it. Mount has been unimpressed with the club’s recent contract extension offers, with the midfielder thought to be demanding a significant hike in his £200,000 per-week wages.

Chelsea on the other hand have splurged half a billion on transfers since Todd Boehly’s takeover, and are now focusing on sales and cutting down the wages. As a result, they are reluctant to give into Mount’s demands and since the England international will only have one year remaining on his current deal, the owners will not tolerate losing him for free if there is no agreement in the summer and will attempt to sell him.

The likes of Manchester City and Manchester United are both admirers of the Chelsea star, but Liverpool are thought to be the frontrunners. Insiders have also claimed that Mount fancies a move to Anfield than the Etihad or the Old Trafford. Meanwhile, Collymore shared an update regarding the Reds’ approach for the 24-year-old, as he told Caught Offside:

“I’ve been told by two very reliable people, one of which being a person who knows Mason Mount personally, that his rumoured move to Liverpool this summer is very much on. It’s already being discussed within both clubs. There is a lot still to decide though, particularly at Chelsea. There will be a lot of outgoings and probably some more incomings so a lot will depend on what the club decides to do but the fact they’re already talking about the possibility of letting Mount go says a lot.”

Chelsea’s Todd Boehly-Clearlake partnership found it difficult to understand how the previous administration had allowed world-class defenders Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen to reach the conclusion of their contracts and become free agents. They are adamant that their club will never again be exposed to such risk, starting with Mason Mount. However, of many things, the midfielder is reportedly hesitant to sign a contract that is longer than five years, with the club’s owners wanting him to sign a six- to eight-year contract.

While Graham Potter to conceded last month that the midfielder’s situation at the club is complicated, Collymore’s remarks will be encouraging for Klopp, who needs backing in the summer market if he is to get back Liverpool in the title race next season. According to a recent talkSPORT report, Liverpool have grown confident that they can persuade Mount to quit Chelsea and move to Anfield.
