This Is What Liverpool Need To Win The Premier League
Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has insisted his team will need a lot of luck if they want to win their first Premier League.
The Reds, who last won the domestic title in 1989-90 season, three years before the Premier League era began, are mounting one of their most promising title challenges in recent years and are currently second in the league. But Klopp said that to finish the season as the champions a team needs luck apart from playing well.
After making a brilliant start to the season, the Merseyside outfit has suffered few setbacks in recent weeks that have threatened to derail their title change. One of their most important players, Philippe Coutinho suffered a serious injury last month which has kept him on the sidelines till now. Then the defeat against Bournemouth when they conceded thrice in the last 15 minutes to lose 4-3 after leading the game 3-1 at one stage. Luck finally showed mercy on them against Everton when Sadio Mane scored in the stoppage-time to take Liverpool second in the table.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Klopp said:“We play a good season, a really good season to now.”
“But you know, becoming champion means you need to play a really good season plus having the luck in the right situations. So not injuries, a little bit of match luck in this game. It’s individual quality in this moment. It’s a coincidence that all this is possible. So you need this luck.”
“You need to be prepared for this moment. You need to make the percentages of coincidence and luck as small as possible. All the rest needs to be planned and that’s what we do. What we can plan, we do. But still it can happen that you lose a game like Bournemouth (which Liverpool lost 4-3 having led 3-1),” he added.
The former Borussia Dortmund manager also urged the fans to keep their expectations low.
He said:“What we try to change is nobody is waiting after 26 years, we’ve tried (to win the title) since five months. That’s no time. We are not the last 25 years, we are now, we are this generation.”
Trailing table-toppers Chelsea by six points, Jurgen Klopp’s men will be looking to keep pace with the leaders when they welcome Stoke City on Tuesday.
