Merseyside club Liverpool were dealt a huge blow in their warm-up to the campaign next season.
The club’s number one shot –stopper last season, Simon Mignolet was criticized heavily for not providing the stability needed for the club at the back and it was clear that the Belgian cost the club a number of points in the league come to the end of the season.
The manager duly obliged by signing Bundesliga’s runner-up for the ‘Players keeper of the year’ award in Loris Karius.
The Anfield outfit managed to snatch him up at a small price and were all set to offer him a place as the first choice goalkeeper at the club while Simon Mignolet was his deputy.
However, the club was dealt a huge blow when it was revealed that the new keeper Lori Karius picked up an injury in a pre-season game.
In the Champions Cup game against Chelsea, Karius and Lovren were involved in a clash that saw the keeper punch Lovren’s head trying to clear the ball away.
Though nothing serious happened during the game, tests after the game showed that Karius has broken his arm and that he will have to undergo a surgery before the end of the week.
It is said that the 23-year-old will be out of action for up to 10 weeks and will miss Liverpool’s crunch clashes against Arsenal and Chelsea in the mean time.
This also meant that Simon Mignolet was back on goal for Liverpool while Alex Manninger, the new summer signing will act as his deputy for the first couple of months into the new season.
The Liverpool fans took it to Twitter to express their dissent on the news. Here is a collection of some of the best tweets:
