Liverpool are preparing a formal bid for Sporting Lisbon’s versatile midfielder Matheus Nunes in order to reinforce their injured midfield, according to Correio da Manha. Jurgen Klopp was hit with multiple casualties of his midfielders before their Premier League opener against Fulham, and then lost another after the game.

The Reds are currently without midfielders Thiago, Naby Keita, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Curtis Jones who are not only nursing injuries, but will also be out for ‘weeks’. Liverpool are left with only Fabinho, Jordan Henderson and James Milner as their options to pick from. However, with 20 days still to go in the transfer market, Liverpool have a glimmer of hope in replenishing their midfield.

Liverpool reportedly need to fork out £42 million for Matheus Nunes

Liverpool have been monitoring the central midfielder for quite a time now, only for possessing multiple options in that position keeping them from bidding for him. However, they could now go all in for Matheus Nunes after the latest injuries in the middle of the park for them.

Klopp has been a special admirer of the Sporting midfielder according to sources close to the club. At 23-years-old, Nunes is a robust, box-to-box midfielder whose relentless pressing makes him a perfect fit for the German’s system at Anfield. His sturdy fitness allowed him to make 50 appearances across all competitions last season, netting four goals and five assists.

The Portugal international can be touted as Thiago’s replacement at Anfield, who will be out for over a month due to a hamstring injury. Liverpool will require to table at least £42 million for Matheus Nunes if they are to acquire his services before the window closes. The amount is the same as Liverpool’s fellow Premier League rivals Wolverhampton Wanderers bid for the midfielder.

While Sporting did accept the bid, Nunes refused to move to England with Wolves as he is reportedly waiting for Liverpool to launch an offer. Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano too has dropped a hint that Liverpool could go for the capture of the Portuguese talent.

While speaking to CaughtOffside, Romano said: “I believe that Sporting Lisbon’s Matheus Nunes is a very interesting player who could be a good fit for this [Liverpool] team, but we need to see the amount that the club will be prepared to invest.”

He continued, “Despite some speculation elsewhere, Marcelo Brozovic is untouchable for Inter Milan. The Croatian midfielder extended his contract a few months ago and will not leave. Klopp and Liverpool will consider a new midfielder if there is an opportunity on the market.”

As confirmed by the Italian, Liverpool were interested in Inter’s Brozovic who is considered unsaleable by his club. Liverpool will now have to hurry if they are planning to buy one or two midfielders before the deadline day.
