Out of favor Liverpool goalkeeper, Simon Mignolet has insisted that he is unhappy with his situation at the club. The Belgium international, who had more Premier League clean sheets than anyone else last year, was demoted to the bench after the arrival of Loris Karius this term.
The Germany goalkeeper has now become the number one choice for the Anfield outfit and Klopp made it clear before his team’s EFL Cup tie against Tottenham Hotspur.
He said:“If nothing happens in training then he (Mignolet) will play. But in this moment we have a No.1 and that’s Loris Karius. That’s the situation and what the goalkeepers know. I cannot leave them in doubt.
However, Mignolet is not satisfied with his role and has vowed to win back his position. Speaking after giving an impressive performance in his team’s 2-1 win over Spurs, he hoped that Klopp would make it a fair challenge for both the goalies to prove their worth.
“I don’t want to be a No 2, that’s clear. I want to play,” he said. I will never give up fighting because that’s not in my character to just give up.
“I will never give up fighting because that’s not in my character to just give up.
“Secondly, because I am not in a situation where I can sit on the bench. I’m 28 years old and I want to play week in, week out.
“So I’ll work hard and I’ll never give up – giving up is not what I want to do. I see it as a challenge that I can overcome. So hopefully it will be a fair challenge based on performances put in on the pitch.”
Mignolet last played for the Reds in the 2-1 win over Chelsea. However, he has won over the fans with his exemplary attitude on the training ground. When asked whether he is thinking of having a talk with Klopp, he said that it was not in his character and vowed to make sure Klopp finds it hard to leave him out.
“I don’t want to think about that. It’s not in my character,” Mignolet said.
“I will always support the team and the club. Hopefully, I can get my chance again to show what I can do. I am happy with my performance against Tottenham.
“I will keep fighting to get my place back…to be honest, the only thing I can do is work hard, keep my head down.”
