UEFA have slapped Liverpool’s Lazar Markovic with a 4-match ban for his alleged outstretched arm hitting the face of Basel’s Behrang Safari. Markovic was shown a direct red card on the night for his alleged act against Basel.

Markovic was guaranteed a one-match suspension for his red card, but a Uefa disciplinary committee has decided to hand the Serbian winger a more severe penalty with a 4-match ban.

Serbian winger will miss both legs of Liverpool’s round of 32 clash against Besiktas and if Liverpool do manage to progress through to the next round, Markovic will subsiquently miss both the legs of Liverpool’s round of 16 clash as well.

Showing his disbelief on the decsion, Markovic posted a tweet which had his rather quizzed looking face with a caption reading “4?”. Markovic’s tweet could land him in further trouble, if UEFA decides to look in to his actions following the decision of his 4 game ban.

Markovic moved from to Liverpool from Benfica for a fee of £20 million in the summer. Since his arrival, Markovic had very little impact on Liverpool’s side. In a change of fortune for the Serbian winger Brendan Rodgers decided to play him few league cup matches and he did well for him. Based on those performances Markovic earned a call up to Liverpool’s first team in Premier League as well.

In ansence of Raheem Sterling and Daniel Sturridge, Markovic along with Philippe Coutinho carried the Liverpool side in the early weeks of January. Markovic is now a regular feature in Liverpool’s squad and is expected to have a bright career with Liverpool as he is just 20-years of age right now.

If Liverpool crash out of Europa League against Besiktas, Markovic’s ban would be carried forward to the next European commitment he gets involved in near future.
