Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk, who has been heavily linked with a move away from the St Mary’s in January, might have hinted that he is on his way to Manchester City.
The highly-rated defender has been linked with a host of Premier League clubs with Liverpool and Manchester City highly interested after his impressive displays for the Saints. He recently fuelled the speculations after expressing his desire to play for big teams
Speaking to The Times, he had said:“Everyone says that at 25, the best years are still to come but I am enjoying every bit of it now.”
“Every player in the world has ambitions; I have ambitions like everyone else. I want to get the maximum out of myself as a player. I can improve in every aspect and that takes time. That takes games. That takes playing at the highest level and with the national team.”
Manchester City are reportedly ready to pay £50m for the Dutchman and the defender’s latest indication will be a huge boost for them albeit it did not come from the centre-back directly. Van Dijk wore the Manchester City jersey only because he received it as a present from Secret Santa. His centre-back partner, Jose Fonte, who too has been linked with several clubs including Liverpool, took to Instagram on Saturday to post photos of some of the squad wearing their Secret Santa gifts.
Both the teams are desperately looking to sign a quality centre-back and have their eye set on the Saints’ defender. Liverpool are currently second in the table, one point ahead of third-placed City but both of them have struggled defensively, a problem that might derail their title challenge.
