Liverpool vs Man City: Preview, Predictions, Expected Lineups And Betting Odds

After a sweet victory over Everton, Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool maintained the pressure on Chelsea at the top of the table with a comfortable 4-1 victory over Stoke City in the penultimate game of the year. However they face a tough test this weekend on the final day of the year as they face Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City in the last game of the year. City are on the back of three successive victories, the last coming over Hull City but the manager will be wary of the threat that Klopp’s side possess playing against teams who love to keep possession of the ball. It is easily the game of the week and with both teams struggling at the back, promises to produce some intense action. Here is the preview of this virtual six pointer, along with the team news, expected lineups , predictions and betting odds.

The League game between Liverpool and Manchester City will be played on Saturday, the 31st of December, at the Anfield in Liverpool. The kick off is scheduled at 5:30 pm BST (11:00 pm IST)

Team News:

Jurgen Klopp revealed ahead of this game that his first team duo Philippe Coutinho and Joel Matip are still not fit enough to start. Danny Ings and Marko Grujic remain sidelined while Sheyi Ojo might make it to the bench for this game.

Expected lineup (4-3-3):

Mignolet; Clyne, Lovren, Klavan, Milner; Henderson, Wijnaldum, Lallana; Mane, Firmino, Origi

Pep Guardiola will be happy to welcome Sergio Aguero back into the first team after he served his suspension in the last game. Vincent Kompany, Fabian Delph and Ilkay Gundogan remain sidelined while John Stones, who picked a knock in the previous game is expected to be back in action.

Expected lienup (4-1-4-1):

Bravo; Zabaleta, Stones, Otamendi, Kolarov; Fernandinho; Navas, Silva, De Bruyne, Sterling; Aguero

Key Battles:

Sergio Aguero vs Ragnar Klavan:

Though he has missed the last 4 games for Manchester City, Sergio Aguero is the danger man for Liverpool in this game at Anfield and Ragnar Klavan will be responsible to keep him quite in this game. The Liverpool defender has been decent in recent games but Aguero is sure to provide him with his toughest test yet in England.

Sadio Mane vs Aleksandar Kolarov:

The top goal scorer for Liverpool, Mane, has been in devastating form this season and he will be up against Kolarov on the wing in this game. The experienced Manchester City defender will try to keep Mane quite but the Liverpool winger is high in confidence and can hurt the City back line if given any space or time on the ball.

Key Stats:

Manchester City’s last and only Premier League win at Anfield (D5 L13) came in May 2003, as Nicolas Anelka scored twice against his former club in a 2-1 victory.

Sergio Aguero has scored four times against Liverpool in the Premier League but none of those goals have been at Anfield.

Liverpool have never failed to score in their previous 19 home Premier League games against City.

Liverpool ended both 2014 (4-1 v Swansea City) and 2015 (1-0 v Sunderland) with a league win.

Liverpool have won their last three Premier League games in a row. The last time they won four consecutively against the Citizens was in 1981 (a run of seven).

Adam Lallana has been involved in more goals than any other midfielder in the Premier League this season (13 – seven goals, six assists).

Liverpool have scored 86 league goals in 2016 so far; their best tally in a calendar year since the 87 goals that they scored in 1985.

Betting Odds:

Liverpool: 13/10

Draw: 5/2

Manchester City: 19/10

Predictions:

Liverpool have not lost a game at Anfield in over an year and are looking one of the strongest teams in the league. Manchester City have enough quality to get a point or even three from this game but with the festive mood still prevalent among the crowd, it will not be easy for the visitors to take anything from this game.

Our Prediction: Liverpool 4-0 Manchester City
