Liverpool vs Exeter – Preview, Team News, Key Battles, Key Stats, Prediction, Betting odds
After an action packed week in the Premier league where Liverpool were able to take just a point from games against Arsenal and Manchester United, the Reds will feature in the replay of the 4th round tie of the FA Cup that ended 2-2 in the first leg against Exeter City.
Jurgen Klopp had several players injured for the first tie and fielded a very young side with just three senior players. The team came back well from a deficit to take this tie to Anfield and will now have to get the work done in front of their home crowd.
However, Paul Tisdale the manager of the travelling side felt that his side have a great chance to cause an upset at Anfield. Here is the preview of the clash along with the Team News, Expected Line-ups and Betting Odds.
The 2nd leg of the FA Cup tie between Liverpool and Exeter City will be played on Wednesday the 20th of January at the Anfield stadium in Liverpool. The kick-off is scheduled at 8:00 pm BST (1:30 am on Thursday IST)
Liverpool are without the likes of Phillipe Coutinoh, Dejan Lovren, Martin Skrtel, Daniel Sturridge, Danny Ings and Divock Origi for this game. Full back Jon Flannagan is expected to be fit for this game but may not start on the night even as Jurgen Klopp expressed his will to field a similar side to the one that played in the first leg. However, Danny Ward, Joe Allen and Jordan Ibe might find themselves given a start on Wednesday.
As for the travelling team, Paul Tisdale has indicated that Christian Ribero and Lee Holmes might be given a start at Anfield. Nichols and Reid were good against the Reds in the last outing while Noble and Butterfield may also be in contention to start the game against Liverpool.
Danny Ward; Connor Randall, Steven Caulker, Thiago Ilori, Brad Smith; Cameroon Brannagan, Joe Allen; Joas Carlos Texeira, Jordan Ibe, Sheyi Ojo; Christian Benteke.
Olejnik; McAllister, Brown, Moore-Taylor, Ribeiro; Tillson, Nicholls, Holmes, Noble; Nichols, Reid
Christian Benteke vs Brown:
Benteke has not been in the best form off late for Liverpool but is still their highest goal scorer this season. He is a great threat in front of goal and can easily change the course of the game against Exeter. Brown who did well to keep the Belgian out in the last game will have to be at his best if they are to entertain any chances of an upset at Anfield.
Nichols vs Steven Caulker:
The new signing will surely get his first outing at his preferred position when Liverpool take on Exeter. Toure who has played 3 games in the last week will be rested while Caulker will be responsible to keep Exeter City out and take Liverpool into the next round. However, he will be up against a tricky Nichols who did extremely well against the Reds in the first leg. This will an interesting battle to watch out for.
Liverpool have won 5 of the last six meetings between these two sides. The 6th match was the 2-2 draw in the first leg of this fixture.
The last time these two sides met before the first leg was in 2011 where Liverpool were 3-1 winners away from home.
Before that fixture the two sides went head to head thrice in the League Cup and once in the FA Cup.
Exeter City: 10/1
Liverpool were the better side against Manchester Untied on Sunday night but lost to the only shot on target on the night from Wayne Rooney. They have struggled defensively and have conceded some soft goals, a habit they have to get rid of if they are looking for silverware this season. The Anfield crowd will surely spurge the home team forward and even with a relatively weak team, Liverpool will be expected to move into the next round avoiding any embarrassment in front of their home crowd.
