According to reports, in order for him to succeed Graham Potter as Chelsea’s head coach, former Barcelona and Spain manager Luis Enrique has demanded the Blues’ meet his three conditions. On April 2, the day after the their 2-0 home loss to Aston Villa at Stamford Bridge, Chelsea fired Potter as manager.

Potter, who was chosen to succeed Thomas Tuchel in September, had a miserable time in London as his team fell to 11th place in the Premier League. While the club’s new owners, Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali had promised to “do things differently” from their predecessor Roman Abramovich, yet they are in search of their third manager since taking over the club.

Luis Enrique has become a contender, according to Fichajes.net, in Chelsea’s search for a successor to Potter. While the former Brighton manager’s deputy, Bruno Saltor has been appointed in charge of the affairs on interim basis, the Blues are reportedly desperate to find a permanent manager since they face a tough end to the season  where they are yet to play a two-legged affair against Real Madrid in the Champions League quarterfinals.

While Chelsea are impressed by the brilliant CV Luis Enrique boasts, the Spaniard too has shown interest in accepting what Potter described as ‘the most difficult’ job of managing the west Londoners. Enrique, who has been out of job since leaving his position as Spain’s coach following the FIFA World Cup in Qatar in 2022, has presented the Blues’ board with three requirements before taking over the club.

First, he demands three brand-new, premier additions from the club in the summer. He demands a flexible winger who would allow him to experiment with different formations, a mobile center-forward, a midfielder who can play with Enzo Fernandez and lead the midfield. While Chelsea have bought players which fit Enrique’s bills, wingers in Mykhaylo Mudryk and Noni Madueke, striker in Joao Felix (on loan) and a midfielder in Carney Chukwuemeka, it seems they will have to do it all over again.

Second, he wants the team to give him ample time to implement his concept of football. He apparently thinks that in a short while he can help the Blues compete for all trophies. Luis Enrique wants the team to continue to believe in his work and refrain from making snap judgements like they have this year. While Boehly had suggested the club would move away from the ‘hire-and-fire’ culture, their need for a third manager this season is evidence that they are back to square one.

Last but not least, Enrique wants to make any necessary roster cuts. He doesn’t want a huge squad, as they have one at Stamford Bridge currently. He wants a tight team with top-notch players that contribute significantly and deliver immediate results. Chelsea would be in agreement with Enrique’s this demand, since the club itself wants to offload a host of players in the summer in order to comply with the FFP and reduce the numbers.

While Luis Enrique’s profile fits in perfectly for the vacant job at Stamford Bridge, according to multiple reports, Julian Nagelsmann, Luciano Spaletti and Mauricio Pochettino are also being discussed by Boehly and co before making a final decision on the treble-winner manager. Enrique had managed a dressing room bloating with superstars such as Lionel Messi, Neymar, Luis Suarez, Xavi, Andres Iniesta at Barca, and won a heap of trophies with them. This could provide him with an edge over his rivals for the Chelsea job.
