Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal for the first time has hinted that David de Gea’s departure to Real Madrid is ‘possible’ despite the club wanting him to stay.
Real Madrid have long linked with the 24-year-old Manchester United custodian, and see him as an ideal replacement for Casillas,33.
As revealed earlier, Los Blancos were ready to wait until 2016 to make a move for the Madrid born Spaniard, when he becomes a free agent.
But after initially being relaxed about his number 1’s contract talk, van Gaal has now revealed a likelihood of Real swooping for De Gea.
Quizzed whether the Champions League winners could move for the former Atletico Madrid man, the Dutchman said, “In football, everything is possible”
”We want to keep him.”
The arrival from Atletico Madrid in summer of 2011 has 17 months left on his current contract. United manager van Gaal’s initial claim allayed fears of the Old Trafford faithful that their firm favorite will soon pen down a new extension, but comments as such are sure to tense them.
De Gea’s agent Jorge Mendes in the past also hasn’t totally ruled out a possibility of the Spaniard swapping white for red. “He’s a United player and has a contract there. You have to respect that but things change every five minutes,” the super-agent said.
The Red Devils have had a quiet January transfer window, with only Sadiq El Fitouri; an 18-year-old right back signed for the reserves, arriving at the Old Trafford. Despite the loss of Michael Carrick through injury, and the imminent departure of Darren Fletcher to West Ham, van Gaal will not be strengthening his squad.
“We won’t be signing anyone”
“I’ve read every day that we are interested in players but I’m not interested in players,” he said.
