Man United legend backs Mourinho to win title this season
Jose Mourinho has got his feet comfortably under the table at Manchester United as we approach the five month anniversary of his appointment.
Many of the club’s supporters have developed a habit for being patient with new managers in recent years and the start of the season certainly hasn’t gone as smoothly as they would have hoped under Mourinho.
Back-to-back Premier League defeats – as well a loss in the Europa League – last month raised a few eyebrows at Old Trafford and some performances haven’t looked that far away from the various tedious displays on show during Louis van Gaal’s tenure.
Admittedly, it is probably still a bit too early for Mourinho to be under any serious pressure, despite the Red Devils’ current sixth-placed standing in the table.
The Portuguese boss has certainly retained the faith of club legend Eric Cantona, who is confident his former side can still be victorious this season.
“It’s just the beginning. Manchester can still be champions. Jose Mourinho is a successful manager at a successful club which this year has successful players,” Cantona told Publico, as per the Manchester Evening News.
“But this is an extremely difficult championship, full of great teams and great managers like Pep Guardiola.”
Cantona won four league titles at Old Trafford so you’d think he would have a pretty good eye for spotting potential contenders.
Man United already know how good Guardiola’s Manchester City are, having lost to their rivals last month, prompting a bad run of three defeats in eight days.
But Mourinho’s men regathered themselves towards the end of September and face a stiff examination of their title credentials after the international break.
Monday night sees a mouth-watering clash with Liverpool at Anfield, furthermore, they also come up against Chelsea and have a rematch with Man City – albeit in the EFL Cup – within the space of nine days.
It is a potentially season-defining period for the Red Devils and we’ll know a lot more about the accuracy of Cantona’s comments afterwards.
