After the departure of Argentine winger Angel Di Maria to Paris Saint-Germain, Manchester United’s iconic number seven is currently vacant.

According to reports from Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf, Louis van Gaal has requested his new signing this summer, Memphis Depay to fill the void wearing the number seven which was once graced by legends like Eric Cantona, David Beckham and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Angel Di Maria got the shirt number seven last season after moving to the Theater of Dreams from Real Madrid and after a disappointing season, left for French champions Paris Saint-Germain.

Depay joined Manchester United this summer from Dutch Eridivisie champions PSV Eindhoven for a staggering £31 million. He was Eridivisie top scorer last season with 22 goals to his name and the 21 year old is rated very highly across the world.

Initially, Depay was thought to be given the number nine shirt as he played for United in the pre-season wearing the number nine which was formerly worn by Radamel Falcao.

Depay is a favourite of van Gaal who seleceted the young Dutchman in his 2014 FIFA World Cup squad.

Depay is capped 17 times for Netherlands national team in such young age.

From his total 90 Eridivisie appearances, he scored 39 goals and assisted 18 times.

Any announcement from the club is still pending and we can expect to see the assignment of the number seven kit to Depay officially.
