English champions Manchester City have activated Spanish midfielder Rodri’s £62.8 million release clause.
Atletico Madrid have confirmed that Manchester City have paid Rodri’s £62.8 million release clause, which makes his current contract terminate which was until 2023.
Rodri, had only signed the La Liga giants from Villareal in 2018 after spending three years with the yellow submarine. The 23 year old made 34 appearances for Atletico and won the Europa League with the club. According to Manchester City he will wear the number 16 for the club.
He comes in as a long term replacement for the aging Fernandinho. Rodri is a holding midfielder who is a great passer of the ball and also good at headers.
He told City’s official website “What City have achieved in the last two years has been amazing and I’m looking forward to being part of such a talented squad, it’s not just the titles they have won, but the way they have managed it, playing attacking football at all times. It’s a style that excites me, as do the club’s ambitions.
I can’t wait to start working with Pep Guardiola and my new team-mates and hopefully we can achieve great things together.”
