Manchester City vs Chelsea : Preview, Predictions and Lineups
The Champions of last year did not have a dream start to their new campaign as they could only pick a point from the travelling Swansea City. Jose Mourinho was on the news all week long for the wrong reasons and this week he has a chance to silence all his critics as he looks to snatch all three points from the game at the Etihad.
For Pellegrini, the first game could not be better as Yaya Toure helped them to the top of the table with a 3-0 victory. They looked decisive with their passing and were a side full of confidence. The new signings have also gelled well and the home game against Jose’s men may not be as tough as it sounds. With the blues a bit shaken after the first week, City have a great chance to take the lead this early in the Premier League’s race to the top.
The Manchester City vs Chelsea game will be played on the 16th of August at 4:00 pm BST (8:30 pm IST) It will be a home game for Manchester City at the Etihad.
For the travelling team, the first game saw their first choice keeper Courtois red carded for a nasty foul. The FA rejected the appeal against the card by the club and he will not be able to play at the Etihad. Asmir Begovic will most probably take the place in his absence. Oscar is also sustaining an injury that makes it highly unlikely for him to play in this game.
Manuel Pellegrini on the other hand will be happy with the news that Yaya Toure who went off with a slight strain against West Brom is fully fit to play in this fixture. Gael Clichy will also be available for selection as he makes his comeback after an injury scare. However, the manager will be without the services of Fabian Delph, the new signing and Fernando in the midfield.
Chelsea last week were made to work hard at the Stamford Bridge. They went in front twice in the game but had to settle with only a point after a gritty performance from the Welsh outfit. This time as well, they will have to make do with a lot of trickery against their defense with players like Sterling and Silva constantly knocking on the door. The attacking outlet, Wilfred Bony may be a weak link with the likes of Terry and Cahill along with Matic present in the defense.
It will be good to see how Chelsea can cope with the threat of a counter attack from the sides when their full backs are pressing high. Aguero has a chance of starting in the game and may just be the difference between the two teams at the end of the day. Sagna and Kolarov will also have their hands full when they go against the likes of Hazard and Willian. Costa has also been in good form and Kompany with Mangala have to make sure he is isolated for most of the game.
But the game may well be decided in the mid-field as Fabregas and Mikel will go against Toure and Fernandinho. It will be an intriguing battle and one surely to look forward to.
City: Hart, Sagna, Kompany (c), Mangala, Kolarov, Toure, Fernandinho, Navas, Silva, Sterling, Aguero.
Chelsea: Begovic, Ivanovic, Cahill, Terry (c), Azpilicueta, Matic, Mikel, Willian, Fabregas, Hazard, Costa.
The Etihad will make sure that its voice is heard in this top of the table clash. This may just tilt the game toward the home side. But the Blues are a very good outfit and will surely not want to leave the Etihad without even a point. This makes this game a hard one to call. We think it might just end in a draw if both teams start solidly in defense.
