Manchester City warned off in pursuit of former Chelsea star
German Bundesliga runners-up Vfl Wolfsburg have warned suitors Manchester City off key playmaker Kevin De Bruyne.
The Belgium International has been one of Bundesliga’s finest performers this season, capping off with 15 goals and setting up an incredible 27 times across all competitions. With an assist against Borussia Dortmund last week, the 23-year-old took his tally for 20 to the season in the, equaling the record for the most assists in a Bundesliga season.
Performances as such have garnered the attention of European heavyweights including Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain, but City are thought to be leading the queue. But Die Wölfe’s CEO Klaus Allofs has sent out a warning to his potential admirers that De Bruyne is ‘unsellable.’
‘At the moment, I’d call him unsellable,’ he told German TV show Doppelpass.
Amid the growing interest in the former Chelsea attacking midfielder, Allofs is confident De Bruyne will be a Wolfsburg player next season.
‘I am 100 per cent convinced he will play for us next year.’ he insisted.
The player himself last week was reluctant to commit his future to the Volkswagen Arena, fuelling to the speculation that Dieter Hecking’s side could well have to do without the services of the Drongen born attacker.
“What will happen in the summer I don’t know,” De Bruyne told Eurosport.
“As a player it is so stupid to say that I will stay here and then some big club is coming in and offer Wolfsburg a lot of money that they want and they say you can go or something like that.
“I’m very happy here and I think I will play here next season but I can’t give you a 100 per cent guarantee.”
Manchester City’s ageing squad needs revamp, and with Yaya Toure and James Milner on the way out, a move for De Bruyne could well be on the cards.
De Bruyne joined Chelsea in the winter of 2012 in a £7 million deal, but remained there for the remainder of the season, which was followed by a loan spell to Werder Bremen. And after the Belgian’s first team opportunities were limited under Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea, De Bruyne completed a £18 million switch to Vfl Wolfsburg.
