According to ESPN FC, Manchester United have opened talks about a new contract with Ashley Young. The Red Devils have continued their recent trend of extending the contracts of the players which runs out this summer or the next.
Young joined United for 17 million from Villa in 2011 and has gone on to make 112 appearances, scoring 13 goals. Lately, Young has emerged as a pivotal player under United manager Louis van Gaal and has kept the British record signing Angel Di Maria out of the team in recent weeks.
The former Aston Villa player, who has been used at left-back, wing-back and on the left wing, has made 20 Premier League starts and has begun their last 10 games in all competitions. In that process he has scored twice.
Young, 29, sees his current expire in 2016 and United have moved to keep the England international at Old Trafford. However it was reported that no announcement is expected imminently as the player waits to agree terms.
United have moved to try and tie down key players who were due to be out of contract in this summer or in 2016. Recently Chris Smalling committed to the club till 2019 and Michael Carrick’s, whose contract was set to expire this summer was extended for another year.
While youngsters Tyler Blackett and Paddy McNair have also been rewarded with new deals for their good form. Latest of them is Andreas Pereira, whose contract was also extended in the same week.
Defender Phil Jones, another of Van Gaal’s first-choice team, is also out of contract in 13 months’ time, along with strikers Robin van Persie and Javier Hernandez and right-back Rafael da Silva. No announcement has been made on them yet. Although it is unlikely that Rafael will stay with the club beyond this summer after falling out of favour.
