Manchester United legend backs Liverpool to challenge for Premier League title

Manchester United legend Paul Scholes has backed Liverpool to challenge for Premier League title after the Reds’ impressive start to the season.

Jurgen Klopp’s team is looking like the most dangerous team in the league and have already scored 16 goals in six league games so far. The Reds have already defeated Arsenal, Leicester City, Chelsea and are sitting fourth in the table. Scholes said that he was initially worried about their defence but their attack compensates for it.

When asked on BT Sport if Liverpool have the potential to go all the way, Scholes said: “They do to me.

“I was a little bit worried about them defensively but you have to say the attacking qualities they are showing at the minute, they look like they are going to score goals against anybody.”

But at the same time, he hoped that United’s bitter rivals fail in their pursuit.

“I hope they don’t,” Scholes added.

Philippe Coutinho was among the scorers as Liverpool showed title class with a 5-1 win over Hull

On the other hand, the former England international rued the fact that United lack the quality to challenge for the title. His opinion came after the Old Trafford outfit gave an uninspiring performance to win 1-0 against Ukrainian outfit Zorya Luhansk. Zlatan Ibrahimovic saved the blushes for the misfiring Red Devils when he headed home the only goal of the game in the second half.

Scholes told BT Sport: “One shot on target probably sums it up. They gave United problems on the break.

“United won which is the most important thing, and there were some bits of good play, but the quality in the final third wasn’t what you’d normally associate with this team.

United boss Jose Mourinho has previously insisted that Europa League is not the place for a team like United and Scholes has cast his doubts over the team’s ambition in the Europa League.

He added: “Maybe the Europa League is something they’re not interested in.

“The manager is passionate on the sidelines and it looks like it’s something he wants to win so he needs to try and transfer that on to the players.”

With one win and one defeat, United are now third in their group below Fenerbahce and Feyenoord.
