Manchester United Player Ratings In League Cup Final Victory Over Southampton -Zlatan Steals The Show!

Remember the name, it’s Zlatan Ibrahimovic. The saviour for Manchester United in more than just a couple of games this season. Facing a Southampton side that was yet to concede in the League Cup, Manchester United managed to give Jose Mourinho his first trophy at the Old Trafford with a thrilling 3-2 victory over the Saints at Wembley on Sunday. The Red Devils took the lead through a peach of a free-kick from Zlatan while Jesse Lingard continued his love story with Wembley, doubling the lead before half time.

But Southampton striker Manolo Gabbiadini managed to put two past De Gea to take the game level at 2-2. However, Manchester United piled on the pressure late in the game and it was the Swedish striker yet again who, with his immaculate positioning, came up with the winner, 3 minutes from the final whistle. Claude Puel’s side were left red-faced but deserve to go out of this with their heads held high. As for United, they will go out of this with a trophy in their cabinet. Here are the player ratings for the Red Devils for this game:

David de Gea (7):

Made a couple of decent saves to keep United in the hunt and also did well with balls played in the air on a decent night for the Spaniard.

Antonio Valencia (5):

Was constantly tested by the likes of Nathan Redmond in the game as he failed to have any impact in the final third, but was generally solid at the back for his side.

Eric Bailly (6):

Stuck to his task well as he managed to keep the likes of Gabbiadini and Long later in the game away from danger for most of the night.

Chris Smalling (6):

Looking confident by the game he plays, Smalling, was superb at the heart of the defence for United but was constantly tortured by Gabbiadini on the night at the back.

Marcos Rojo (7):

Shifted onto the left-flank, Rojo, looked uncomfortable most game, playing catchup for Southampton’s attacks for most of the game. However, played a huge role in the first goal for his side.

Ander Herrera (6):

His usual self in the midfield as he helped Manchester United turn defence into attack confidently on the night and also provided the assist for the winner.

Paul Pogba (6):

Started the game brightly and created a few chances but slowly faded away and was just a bystander late in the game.

Jesse Lingard (6):

Though scored an important goal on the night, Lingard, was just not at his best as he missed a couple of chances and could have easily been sent off.

Juan Mata (5):

Came back from attending the death of his grandfather in Spain and was understandably below par on the night.

Anthony Martial (6):

Looked energetic on the night as he was happy to take on his man and provided width in the final third that helped United score thrice on the night.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic (8):

A clear Man of the Match on the night, Zlatan, scored a stunning free-kick to open the scoring and went on to steal the show late in the game with a deserving winner, helping himself and the manager to a debut top flight trophy at the Old Trafford.

Subs:

Michael Carrick (6):

Replaced Mata just a minute into the second half and managed to add the balance to the midfield that was missing earlier in the game.

Marcus Rashford (6):

Ran the lines well late in the game to keep up the pressure on the Saints even at 2-2.

Marouane Fellaini (5):

Came in too late into the game to have any kind of a telling impact.
