This Manchester united star compares himself with Ibrahimovic!!
Memphis Depay has admitted to feeling like “a loaded gun” at Manchester United.
The Dutchman hasn’t started a game for the Red Devils this season, making a mere three Premier League appearances from the bench and clocking 12 minutes on the pitch.
It’s little wonder he’s been shown such little faith by Jose Mourinho, of course, following a tumultuous debut season under Louis van Gaal.
Depay arrived for £25 million from PSV Eindhoven in 2015 but dramatically failed to justify his big-money move, scoring a meagre two league goals in 29 appearances.
A point to prove he has but until Mourinho grants him the opportunity to do so, a supporting role is what the 22-year-old must settle for.
But that’s not good enough for Depay, who is so sure of his ability that he claims he has something in common with summer signing Zlatan Ibrahimovic.
According to the winger, they share a “killer mentality”.
He told De Telegraaf, per Manchester Evening News: “With Zlatan Ibrahimovic, I talk a lot. He has a killer mentality and wants to win everything, even in training. Like me.
“Therefore, the level is so high. I train with top players.”
Not too sure about that one, Memphis.
Despite being persistently snubbed by Mourinho, Depay remains determined to resurrect his United career but did accept that he might have to look for first-team football elsewhere.
“The training sessions are going well,” he added. “I’m sharp and fit. But that applies to everyone.
“The level has become higher. Jose Mourinho is a top coach. I am the same person and I know what I want. A supporting role is not for me.
“I’m not a player who is happy with the fact that he is [just] under contract with Manchester United. This is my dream club, but I want to play.
“I feel like a loaded gun, I am ready to play, but wait for my chance. That’s why I’m so happy that I’m at Orange (on international duty with the Netherlands). This is a new opportunity to show myself.”
While Depay’s talent is without question, it’s difficult to picture him forcing his way back into United’s set up with the quality Mourinho already has out wide.
Juan Mata, Marcus Rashford, Jesse Lingard and Anthony Martial have rotated on the flanks this season and performed admirably when called upon.
Martial is United’s current fourth-choice winger but following his stunning strike against Stoke City on Sunday, even he has staked a place in Mourinho’s starting XI.
A move away, be it on loan or permanent, seems the only option for Depay.
