Manchester United star Chris Smalling has signed his contract extension which will keep the defender at Old Trafford until June 2019. Smalling’s new contract has put all the news of linking him away with a move to Arsenal in the summer.
Chris Smalling has developed in to a better player in huge leaps and bounces with Manchester United but finally this season, Smalling has looked to have found a confirmed slot in the United lineup.
Smalling has made 147 appearances for United so far scoring 9 goals and winning 2 Premier League winners medal. Manager Louis Van Gaal was full of praises for his key defender penned a new contract with the club.
Van Gaal said: “Chris has improved and developed immensely during the short time that I have been at the club and has become an integral part of the first-team squad.
“He always conducts himself in a very professional manner and it is also pleasing that he has scored some important goals this season too. I am delighted he has signed a new contract.”
Chris Smalling was joyed after signing his contract extension as the England international recalled some of his greatest moments in a United shirt over 4 season at the club. Smalling expressed his joy of playing in front of a pakced stadium with close 80,000 fans week-in-week-out.
Smalling said: “We’re very lucky that people travel from all over the world to come and see us whenever we play.”
Despite spending 4 years at the club, Smalling is still amazed at the global appeal of Manchester United. Smalling describes how he and other United stars realize the actual worth of Manchester United when they move abroad to play their pre-seasons or other matches.
Smalling said: “Football is big in this country but it doesn’t sink in about how big it is elsewhere until you go to other countries.”
Speaking about his most favorite moment as a United player, Smalling picked the incredible over-head kick goal by Wayne Rooney against Manchester City to win the Derby.
Smalling said: “Winning my first league title of course, but I’d also say my first Manchester derby at Old Trafford when Wazza scored that overhead kick.
“It’s a moment that will stick with me. I remember looking around at the fans and seeing the sheer joy that is packed into a moment like that in a home derby game.
