Failed Attempt: Potential United target reveals why he snubbed Old Trafford summer move 1

Southampton defender Jose Fonte has spoken out on his failed move to Old Trafforf this summer after being linked with the Red Devils throughout the summer.

The 32-year old was speculated to leave Southampton in favour of Manchester United as new manager Jose Mourinho was keen to add an experienced central defender to his roster before the end of the summer transfer window.

The veteran defender has set his focus on Southampton for the current season but has admitted he has bigger goals before he retires from the game.

“Was I disappointed the Man United move didn’t happen? Let’s leave that for another time. Now I’m focused on Southampton.”

He added: “I have lots of targets: to play in the Champions League, to play in a World Cup, to win a trophy in England.”

He later released a statement on his official Facebook account, which read: “Once in the national team only national team interviews/talks are allowed hence my ‘let’s leave that for another time’ when asked about questions regarding my own club situation.

“To make it perfectly clear to everyone that might have some difficulty understanding I am a Southampton player, and proudly have been since 2010, understand that once I step on the pitch with the saints shirt and armband I give my blood, sweat and tears for the club and will always will no matter what you read or think.

“My professionalism means everything to me, and no one can point me a finger about it. I am fully committed to succeed with my two teams @southamptonfc and @selecoesportugal.

“Thank you #wemarchon.”

The defender who have starred for Portugal in their Euro 2016 triumph was one of the best centre backs in England available in the market this summer. Both Manchester United, Arsenal are interested in signing him but Southampton have managed to keep hold of their captain for the season.
