Manchester United are looking for Frenkie de Jong’s alternatives after the Dutchman is refusing to sign with them. The Red Devils have turned to Leicester City’s Youri Tielemans for a transfer this summer.
Barca are yet to pay £17 million as part of De Jong’s salary which is holding up his move to United, despite both the clubs striking a £72 million deal.
Furthermore, De Jong wants to continue to play in the Champions League due to which he is rejecting United.
As a result, United have grown frustrated and now want Tielemans who is also chased by Arsenal. The Belgian wants to move on to a new challenge this summer and is hence looking for a new club.
United ready to battle it out with Arsenal for Youri Tielemans
Arsenal are at the moment ahead of United in their pursuit of Youri Tielemans. The Gunners have reportedly agreed personal terms with the midfielder and are confident of signing him in the coming weeks.
However, Arsenal are yet to negotiate a fee with Leicester for the transfer to happen. Mikel Arteta’s side are currently busy with the acquisition of Manchester City’s Oleksandr Zinchenko.
But rumours tell that Zinchenko’s signing could put Arsenal off Tieleman’s trail since Arteta plans to deploy the Ukrainian full-back in the midfield as well.
This has put United on alert who are plotting to submit a bid for Tielemans. Erik ten Hag has demanded reinforcements in the midfield since the departures of Pogba, Matic, Mata and Lingard.
United want Tielemans since he has plenty of Premier League experience and is available for a fee as low as £30 million. Tielemans is in the last year of his contract and the Foxes want to avoid losing him for free next summer.
Leicester manager Brendan Rodgers has further spoken about his midfielder’s situation. Rodgers said, “There’s no update at all. He’s an amazing guy to work with.
“He’s just re-joined the club [for pre-season] and he’s pretty much the same. In training he’s very committed.
“He’s happy in his work and he’s happy at the club. But naturally with a year in his contract he may feel he has to look at everything for him and his family.
“But I certainly know he’s committed while he is here. I’ll have a good chat with Youri next week to get privately what he’s thinking. But it won’t change, whether he’s leaving or staying for another five years, he’ll still be super committed”.
Youri Tielemans now has a choice to make between the Gunners and the Red Devils.
