The Red Devils faced the Pensioners in a match crucial to both their campaigns and it ended up a disappointing night for either side at the Old Trafford. Here is what we think of the players who mustered up the goalless draw.
Manchester United Player Ratings vs Chelsea
De Gea: 4.5/5
Made a couple of crucial world class saves but was topped once again by Thibaut Courtois.
Did what was required of him and was a constant threat when overlapping Martial but failed to deliver any tangible results.
Kept Eden quiet in the first half but was miserable when faced with him in the second half. Displayed good distribution.
Was the usual calm and composed self and held off Chelsea well in the first as well as second half. Impulsive decisions caused him to lose his position a couple of times over the second half.
The once heralded Englishman resorted to kicking opponents and trying hopeful crosses for the whole duration of the match. A disappointing performance if keeping in mind his previously possessed talents.
Did his job well and was a decent cover to United defence.
Miserable distribution from the German midfielder. Innumerable occasions during the second half where he had to foul the opponent because he was caught in possession. Lucky to not concede a goal by his direct fault.
The only Manchester United player who seemed like he could change the scoreline. Almost scored, almost assisted. A night to both remember and forget for the French youngster.
Above average play overall from the Spanish maestro who looked ready to serve it to the Chelsea backline in the first 15 minutes but faded dramatically as the match went on.
The only two thing Herrera did of note was failing to score a tap in and receive a yellow card for a shameful foul on Eden Hazard. He was decent yet cynical while defending but did let Pedro past him half the time.
A very baffling performance from the highest earner in the league as he looked his old, sharp self as soon as he touched the ball in midfield or was facing against the goal but played miserably in the attacking third when the chances were presented to him. A late miss he will rue has to be low point for the striker this season.
Utterly Miserable. I quote the commentator: “Memphis seems to be testing the patience of the home fans here.”
Did his job well and was a decent replacement to Darmian.
Came on to shore up the defence and did that well.
Chelsea Player Ratings vs Manchester United
A save of the season contender from Thibaut as he kept Herrera at bay. Was his usual self against United but was miserable at his distribution, conceding possession to Mata instead of Azpi in the opening half.
Man of the match nominee in this encounter as he simply owned his flank. There had been zero mistakes by this brilliant full back in the entirety of the match and forced Herrera to drift in and lay to waste Young’s opportunities by limiting him to deep crosses.
Did what was expected of him and didn’t have any hassles while handling Rooney.
Brilliant showing from the youngster who had the added responsibility for Martial simply because Ivanovic was as mobile as a rock.
Miserable. Only Depay beats him to the worst performer of the day. Martial was running circles around him in the first half. Luckily for Chelsea he improved in the second and restricted Martial to crosses.
Great dribbling from the man mountain but failed to deliver when it mattered the most. Was decent with his defensive output.
Silent and strong performances define Mikel and he was at it again as he kept Rooney and Mata in his pocket. A total of zero one twos were completed by United and that goes to show his discipline.
Poor dribbling but exceptional passing described his game tonight. Always looking for the through ball. Almost scored and almost assisted tonight.
Anonymous. Failed to link up, failed to cover in the first half. It wouldn’t be a surprise if he is dropped from the lineup altogether.
Did not have a great night as he failed to carry the ball, nor to create any chances for the team. Defensive contribution was also much less than what we expect from the Brazilian.
Had a first half to forget but came back stronger for the second. Almost assisted Pedro with a brilliant dribble and pass and was responsible for dozens of fouls committed by United all over the pitch.
Was played on the right wing to the expected effect. Martial had to switch wings to find the ball since Ramires came on.
Came on for the final 30 seconds.
