Manchester United assistant manager Ryan Giggs said that the club are targeting “proven winners” to strengthen the “spine” of the team for the next season. Giggs says that van Gaal is keen to sign players with rich experience in central defense, central midfield and attack.
The Red devils are busy in the transfer market as they have already Memphis Depay earlier and are favorites to sign the likes of Sergio Ramos (Real Madrid) and Morgan Schneiderlin (Southampton). The likes of Gundogan, Schweinsteiger, Cavani and Hummels are very much in their wish list for the summer.
United might also need a goalkepper this summer if de Gea decides to join Real Madrid while they are also looking for a star striker across Europe with the likes of van Persie and Javier Hernandez expected to leave Old trafford this summer.
Giggs told the Sunday Times: “If there are players available who are winners, who are proven then, yeah, let’s go and get them. On holiday I was still on the phone to Albert about players coming in and players for the new season.
“With any good team, the spine is important. Midfield, striker, centre-backs, goalkeeper. I’m sure we’ll be looking to strengthen the spine all the way through.
“We obviously need to strengthen because we were fourth. We weren’t first, second or third. And the teams above us will strengthen, too. There’s the added challenge of the Champions League, and we need players who are going to improve us.
“But we’re not too far away. We had a great record last season in the big games and the problem was the consistency. We dropped points we shouldn’t have and got off to a bad start.”
